The New Brunswick chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMINB) has been nominated as global chapter of the year out of all North American chapters for its category. The New Brunswick chapter includes members from both NB and PEI. The volunteer board of directors of PMINB says it is honoured to be selected.

“We are thrilled to be recognized among the top chapters for project professionals across the globe,” said PMINB president Duncan Gallant. “We have a great story to tell in New Brunswick and PEI. Our members represent a wide variety of project professionals across a diverse range of industries, and we are happy to provide them a forum to share their knowledge and advance the profession.”

The PMI Chapter of the Year Awards program recognizes the best chapters out of three size categories. PMI globally has over 300 chapters representing 600,000 project management professionals in 214 countries and territories. PMINB is one of five nominated chapters in the category of 300 to 1,500 members, competing with PMI South Korea, Southern Italy, Puerto Rico, Chennai, and Kenya.

“PMINB has seen incredible growth in membership over the last few years,” said Gallant. “We have increased our chapter membership by close to 40% and now have over 600 members; which is the highest number of members in our chapter’s history. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.”

Along with its suite of networking and learning opportunities, PMINB attributes its incredible growth to two innovative programs: its outreach to post-secondary students, including a partnership with UNB Saint John’s MBA program, and expanding its professional development offerings to a wider, virtual audience.

“We are incredibly grateful to our partnership with the UNBSJ MBA program,” said Gallant. “Students in the Project Management stream have injected new enthusiasm into the chapter, while receiving mentoring, professional development, and networking opportunities.”

Dr. Shelley Rinehart, Director of the MBA Program at UNBSJ, explained the Project Management Stream was their first program stream based on a partnership with industry. “The PM Stream continues to be one of the most popular with our students fuelled by the value of the pathway to the professional designation. More importantly, our partnership with PMINB goes far beyond an academic stream,” said Rinehart. “Members of the Chapter are mentors, course instructors, competition judges and huge supporters of professional development programming for our students. We are very excited to hear of this well-deserved recognition of the work they do.”

PMINB has also expanded their professional development offerings to include virtual and in-person sessions. “During the pandemic, we pivoted to provide services to members virtually.” said Gallant. “It has allowed us expand our offerings outside of the larger cities and reach project management professionals across the two provinces, regardless of location.”

This success has expanded to PMINB’s Professional Development conference, which offers a mix of online and in-person learning and networking opportunities. The event most recently had 180 registrants and has been seen as a model for other chapters to follow.
